Stone stairway leading up to The Crag through the forest
About the cottage

A modern build, rooted in the landscape

The Crag sits on a granite outcrop above Haliburton Lake, its dark timber and stone chosen to sit quietly against the hemlock and pines. Inside, tall windows keep the forest close from every room, and outside, a stone stairway winds down the rock face straight to the water's edge.

We didn't just build this house, we spent four years designing it around the land. As owners, we spent 6 years walking every ridge of the property through every season before a single footing was poured, studying how the light moved through the trees, where the granite broke through the soil, and how the shoreline shifted from calm morning glass to golden evening light. The result is a home that doesn't sit on the landscape so much as within it, anchored directly into the bedrock, so that being here feels less like visiting the forest and more like belonging to it.

Every material was chosen with that feeling in mind. Walls of glass dissolve the line between inside and out. Pine timbers echo the trees just beyond them. And the same natural stone that forms the exterior walls carries through the house itself, so the calm of the forest follows you through every room.

Some moments here have to be experienced to be believed. The cantilevered soaking tub, wrapped on three sides by ten-foot tall windows, lets you quite literally bathe in the forest canopy. The screened and glass outdoor rooms, including a 560-square-foot screen room with its own massive wood-burning fireplace, mean you can hot tub under the stars, linger over dinner as the sun sets across the lake, or curl up fireside with the sounds of the forest and lake around you, in every season. Add over 2,000 square feet of wraparound deck, a well kept firepit in the forest, with a view of every perfect sunset, and over 600 feet of crystal-clear private waterfront with canoes and kayaks waiting at the dock, and the hardest part of your stay is deciding where to be.

Beyond our six acres of granite, sugarbush, hemlock, pine, and birch forest lies something rarer still: over 1,500 acres of untouched old-growth forest just across the private road, yours to hike and explore. And with five bedrooms and six beds, the whole group fits comfortably — without anyone feeling like they're cramped.

We built The Crag to slow life down: slow mornings with coffee in the hot tub, peaceful days on the dock, long evenings with dinner and a fire in the screened porch, and the kind of quiet that stays with you long after you've gone home. We can't wait to share it with you!
